So You Brush Your Teeth and Hair, but How About Your Skin?

Dry brushing a full body detoxification

We focus so heavily on maintaining youthful and glowing facial skin often neglecting the skin that covers the rest of our body. What if there was a quick way to maintain both your internal health and external skin all at the same time? And create the perfect canvas for your skincare to absorb optimally. Now that I have your attention the secret is Dry Brushing - a full body detoxification method dating back to ancient Ayurveda. In Sanskrit this is known as garshana, and is typically performed with raw silk gloves. However, for those who are Vegan and prefer a cruelty free alternative use a natural plant based brush (never synthetic). Good choices are jute or cactus as seen in the picture.

The goal is to stimulate the lymph and gently move metabolic waste and toxins to the elimination organs (kidneys and liver).

We all know that our skin is our largest organ. You’ll have to agree it’s worth giving a little more love and respect to when you realize what it does for you. Your skin is on the front lines serving and protecting you every day. It is literally a waterproof, insulating shield guarding the body from extreme temperatures, damaging sunlight, harmful chemicals and toxins. Needless to say it is your “OOTD” each day and everyday. Let’s show our skin a little TLC.

Now that you are sold let’s get Dry Brushing shall we? Remember always brush towards your heart. Avoid your face and head. Brush for 3-5 minutes.

HOW TO?

  1. Strip down and begin to brush on DRY skin (hence the name) prior to getting into the shower/bath. A lovely way to start off your morning as this action is invigorating and energizing.

  2. Starting at your feet, begin with long, swift strokes all the way along your legs. Keeping the pressure light and the brush moving towards your heart. Remember you are not scrubbing. Next brush your hands and arms keeping the strokes going towards your heart. Don't forget the harder to reach places along the back of your body (your neck, back and buttocks). This is where a dry brush with a long handle is handy. When you arrive at your stomach you’ll do circular clockwise strokes. Avoid your face.

  3. Go enjoy your shower or bath to wash off any dead skin. Use a mild all natural soap like Bakula Purifying Ayurvedic Soap Bar

  4. After you towel off, your skin is optimally primed to absorb your skincare products. So choose wisely. We recommend using one of our Body Butter blends or organic virgin coconut oil.
